On the first day of the attack, X-Day, 5th July 1943, eleven Tigers under SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer Kling move northwards to the town of Bykovka, under instructions to break through the Soviet defences located to the south and south-east of the town. The enemy forces, which included T34s, were well placed in ambush positions to thwart the German move. Wittmann's Tiger quickly took out two of the T34s and the remaining enemy vehicles quickly retreated. It was to be a dramatic day for Wittmann and his crew - during the many sorties that were undertaken, loader Walter Koch was hit in the head with splinters and the Tiger drove over a mine, damaging one of the tracks. The injured Koch was replaced by SS-Panzerschutze Max Gaube, and the Tiger was quickly towed to safety. In spite of the small misfortunes that came its way, Wittmann's Tiger had destroyed large amounts of soviet vehicles and armour, including 8 Russian tanks.

Signed by Gerhard Fischer
and
Albert Kerscher (deceased).

Original pencil drawing by Jason Askew, with original signatures.

Pencil drawing image area size 25.5 inches x 17 inches (65cm x 43cm) Surrounded by coloured border, making the total paper size 35 inches x 23.5 inches (89cm x 63cm)

DHM2266AP. Kursk - Clash of Steel by Nicolas Trudgian.
The Germans launched their attack on the Kursk salient on 5th July 1943, and for both sides this was maximum effort. The Soviets, however, informed by intelligence of the impending German attack, had ample time to prepare huge defensive works with hundreds of planned anti tank belts. They deployed 10 Tank Corps, 5 Tank Armies, 1 mechanised Corps and 14 Field Armies equipped with 4000 anti tank guns and 6000 tanks. The Soviet Air Forces were equally impressive - 2600 aircraft. The Germans, outnumbered in every department, were forced to scrape together whatever serviceable tanks they could from their badly under strength Panzer formations. Most of the tanks deployed were old Panzer IIIs or IVs, with only 147 Tigers available for action. The northern German attack made very little headway, but, in the south, the Germans had grouped all of the SS Panzer forces into the II SS Panzer Corps and these units, despite the enormous Soviet forces ranged against them, began to smash their way through the Soviet defences. The Luftwaffe too had brought together 1200 aircraft and these made an immediate impact on the fighting - on the first day alone German fighters broke up massive formations of Soviet aircraft, over 400 victories being claimed.

Last 3 copies available of this sold out edition.

Signed by :
Feldwebel Heinz Radlauer,
Feldwebel Erich Brunotte,
SS-Sturmmann Ernst Kufner,
Unteroffizier Johannes Oesterhelt
and
SS-Oberscharfuhrer Werner Wendt.

Limited edition of 25 artist proofs.

Paper size approx 33 inches x 23 inches (84cm x 58cm)

Looking for Trouble by David Pentland.
