Napoleon’s Army Traversing Somosierra Pass by Jan Van Chelminski
In November 1808, during the Peninsular War, Napoleons army faced the challenge of crossing the Somosierra Pass in the Guadarrama Mountains. The Spanish defenders, entrenched in strong positions tried to block the French advance. Despite the rugged terrain and fierce resistance, Napoleons troops, led by daring assaults and effective use of artillery, managed to overcome the Spanish defences. The successful crossing of Somosierra was a critical moment that allowed Napoleon to advance into Madrid.
