The Wreck of the Empress Queen by Ivan Berryman. \u003cp\u003e On 3rd February 1916, P.S. Empress Queen, which had been requisitioned by the Royal Navy for war duties, was returning to Southampton from Cherbourg with 1,300 men on board when she struck the ledge at Bembridge on the Isle of Wight and was carried high onto the rocks by the rising tide. The Bembridge lifeboat Queen Victoria (ON468) was immediately in sttendance and, as the weather worstened managed to rescue the remaining 110 men on board over the course of four trips, most of the troops having been evacuated onto destroyers. The Queen Victoria was damaged on the rocks on her third trip, but managed one more rescue to remove the crew. For his heroism, Coxwain John Holbrook was awarded the RNLI Silver Medal.
