After the defeat of the Jacobite forces at the Battle of Culloden in April 1746, Bonnie Prince Charles, the pretender to the Scottish throne, faced the threat of capture. Over the next several months, he embarked on a perilous journey through the Scottish Highlands, evading British troops and relying on loyal supporters for assistance. Disguised and living in hiding he eventually managed to escape to France in September 1746 aboard a French ship, successfully evading capture and preserving his life despite the loss of his cause.
