The Battle of Antietam, fought near Sharpsburg. Maryland was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history. It pitted Union General George B. McClellan against
Confederate General Robert E. Lee and was marked by intense an brutal combat, with significant casualties on both sides, totalling around 22,000. Although neither side achieved a decisive victory, the battle halted Lee's invasion of the North and provided President Abraham Lincoln with the opportunity to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. The battle is often seen as a strategic Union victory for this reason.
