Battle of Klyastitsy by Peter Von Hess [Postcard]
On the 30th of July 1812, French Cavalry under command of General Oudinot were faced with a surprise attack by eight Russian Hussar and Cossack squadrons, commanded by General Kulnev. At the time the French occupied the village of Klyastitsy. To prevent its capture, Oudinot ordered the only bridge to be set on fire, however the 2nd Batallion Pavlovsk Grenadier Regiment rushed the burning bridge and the French were forced to retreat. This marked the battle as a minor, but costly victory for the Russian forces. Taken from the original book plate published in 1912.
