French soldiers warm themselves in front of their bivouac fires and under blankets at Le Bourget. In freezing conditions, many French soldiers suffered from frostbite, with temperatures dropping to -14 degrees Celsius. The frigid overnight camp contributed to their poor performance against the better rested and well insulated Prussian forces, who prevented the French breakout attempt at Le Bourget.
