The Battle of Castiglione, fought on August 5, 1796, was a key conflict in the French Revolutionary Wars during Napoleon Bonaparte's Italian campaign. The Austrians aimed to relieve their besieged garrison in Mantua but Bonaparte's rapid manoeuvres and strategic brilliance allowed the French to outflank and decisively defeat the Austrian forces This victory forced the Austrians to retreat, securing French control over northern Italy. General Augereau was entrusted with commanding the French left wing. His forces were instrumental in executing Napoleon's overall battle plan. His ability do maintain momentum and push forward played a significant role in weakening the Austrian resistance and leading to a swift victory.
