NBP0402. How He Won the Victoria Cross by Charles Stewart

October 20th 1900, near Zeerust, Lieutenant Doxat of the 3rd Battalion Imperial Yeomanry led a group of Mounted Infantry to scout a position occupied by about 100 Boers on a ridge of kopjes. When they were within 300 yards, the enemy opened heavy fire, forcing the party to retreat and leaving behind one man who had lost his horse. Realizing the danger the stranded soldier was in Lieutenant Doxat rode back through intense fire, rescued him, and brought him back to safety. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for this act of bravery on December 17th 1901.
