The use of machine guns in World War I significantly transformed military tactics, primarily favouring defensive strategies. Their ability to deliver sustained fire made it challenging for infantry to launch successful assaults leading to an emphasis on trench warfare. Commanders concentrated machine guns in specific areas to maximize their effectiveness, integrating them with artillery and infantry for combined arms operations. As the war progressed lighter machine guns allowed for more mobility, influencing tactics and creating a psychological impact on both attackers and defenders.
