Archers posed a unique challenge to Spartan warriors, who were primarily trained for close combat in phalanx formations. While the heavily armoured Spartans could withstand a significant amount of missile fire due to their large shields and protective armour, sustained volleys of arrows could disrupt their formations and cause casualties.
