In 222 B.C. a notable encounter, famous ever after in song, drama
and story, took place between the Romans and Gauls at Clastidium
near Pavia. In the course of the battle the consul Marcellus
singled out the Gallic leader Virdumarus, and slew him with his own
hand, thus gaining what was called the "spolia opima" a guerdon that
fell only to two other generals in the whole history of Rome.
