Neptunes Wrath by Ivan Berryman (PC)
Type: Postcard
The Battle of Trafalgar, 21st October 1805 and HMS Neptune, having raked the French flagship Bucentaure, found herself alongside the largest warship in the world, the Spanish Santisima Trinidad, a four-decked leviathan of 130 guns. Captain Thomas Frances Freemantle positioned Neptune such that first the mizzen and then the main masts of the Spanish flagship came crashing down under the British ships relentless fire. By 2.30pm, the foremast of the Santisima Trinidad had also fallen, leaving the ship an uncontrollable hulk. Although taken in tow as a prize after the battle, the red and black colossus foundered in the storm that followed and was lost. HMS Neptune herself survived, towing the badly damaged HMS Victory to safety.
