Leading the 6th Innskilling Dragoons in the charge of the Union Brigade, Sgt.Maj. Marshall became embroiled in a fight with troopers of the French 5th Cuirassiers. Severely wounded with 19 lance and sabre wounds he lay on the battlefield nights before he was found. Despite his wounds he recovered to live another 10 years.
