The Battle of Winchester, fought on September 19, 1864, was part of the Valley Campaigns of the American Civil War, where Union General Philip Sheridan faced Confederate General Jubal Early. Sheridans forces initially struggled but turned the tide with a decisive cavalry charge led by his cavalry commander General Wesley Merritt, which broke the Confederate lines.
