Training from a young age in rigorous conditions, Spartans emphasized
endurance, cohesion, and strict martial discipline. Their fighting style
relied on unity and collective strength, seen most prominently in the
phalanx formation; tightly packed rows of soldiers with overlapping 
shields and long spears, creating a formidable wall of defence and offence.
