The 78th Highlanders at Lucknow by Stanley Wood [Postcard]

Soldiers from the 78th (Highlanders) Regiment of Foot provide relief during the Siege of Lucknow. Indian soldiers from the East India Company broke into open rebellion on the 30th of May 1857. They would siege the entrenched British garrison in Lucknow, leading to bloody fighting that lasted months. The first siege of Lucknow lasted 87 days and the second siege lasted a further 61 days. Ultimately the British forces would evacuate on the 19th of November. Image taken from original book plates published in 1915.
