The Battle of Spion Kop was a significant British loss during the Second Boer War, Spion Kop was the largest hill in the region and would be a significant strategic position, if the British were to capture it. The Boer defence was fierce however, and the British positions poor. Of note, Winston Churchill was present at this engagement as a courier, as well as a Mahatma Gandhi, who was a stretcher bearer.
