The Battle of Bull Run, was the first major land battle of the American Civil War. It took place near Manassas Junction, Virginia between the Union Army, commanded by General Irvin McDowell and the Confederate Army, led by Generals Pierre G.T. Beauregard and Joseph E. Johnston. The battle ended in a decisive Confederate victory as Union forces were forced to retreat in disarray back to Washington, D.C.
