The Third Battle of Petersburg (also known as the fall of Petersburg) was a crucial engagement in the American Civil War. Union General Ulysses S. Grant sought to break the Confederate defences around Petersburg. Virginia, held by General Robert E. Lee's forces.
The battle involved a series of intense assaults on Confederate fortifications and supply lines. The heavy attacks by the much larger Union army ultimately led to the Confederates fleeing the city, which was subsequently occupied by the Union Forces. This victory set the stage for the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865.
