The Mamelukes by Felician Myrbach [Postcard]
The Mamelukes (translated as one who is owned from Arabic) were an ethnically diverse group of slave-soldiers, freed slaves and also enslaved mercenaries. They were assigned to high-ranking military duties and administrative positions. They were used by a variety of societies, mostly in the Muslim world, dating back to the 800s. Pictured here in 1803 outside the city of Versailles. Taken from the original book plates published 1893.
