an ethnically diverse group of slave-soldiers, freed slaves and also
enslaved mercenaries. They were assigned to high-ranking military
duties and administrative positions. They were used by a variety
of societies, mostly in the Muslim world, dating back to the 800's.
Pictured here in 1803 outside the city of Versailles.
Taken from the original book plates published 1893.
