A Roman legionary was a professional soldier of the Roman army. Often praised for their fighting effectiveness and tactical prowess, they were the foremost fighting unit of the Roman Empire. A legionary would typically be armed with a shield, javelin and short sword. Roman legionaries served as a source of labour as well as their role as trained soldiers, with a significant portion of the infrastructure which connected the Roman empire having been built by legionaries. They would act to keep the peace among civilian populations, with high ranking legionaries also acting as judges to settle disputes in the local populace.
