On the morning of the 7th of October 1813, Wellington's army crossed the Bidassoa estuary to attack French positions on the eastern bank. The crossing was perilous as water at points came up to shoulder level, after the French realised they were under attack, they opened fire across the river, adding further peril. The Allies successfully executed a series of coordinated attacks that allowed them to cross the river and establish a foothold in French-held territory.
