The Siege of Delhi, 1857 by Alfred Pearse [Postcard]

The Siege of Delhi was one of the key battles during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Delhi had been captured by the rebels on the 11th of May, with a lot of the civilians inside the city joining the rebel mob. The city was determined to be too well fortified and too strongly held to be attacked overtly, so a siege was devised.The siege lasted from June to September before a frontal assault took place, led by a large bombardment of the city. Ultimately the city was re-captured on the 21st of September 1857. Taken from the original book plates published in 1901.
