The Wreck of the Birkenhead 1852 by Charles Dixon (C)
The HMS Birkenhead was lost in 1852 off the coast of South Africa when the troopship struck a submerged rock. With too few lifeboats for everyone the soldiers famously stood firm so the women and children could escape, an act of discipline and sacrifice that became known as the origin of the women and children first protocol. Some of the soldiers managed to swim the 2 miles to shore over the next 12 hours, often hanging on to pieces of the wreck to stay afloat, but most drowned, died of exposure, or were killed by sharks.
Professionally produced using a high quality inkjet digital press and printed on 300gsm art stock. These prints are at an affordable price for our collectors and include specially selected historical images from our large Cranston Fine Arts archive. Our archive of historical military art has been built over 30 years and we are now beginning to reproduce a selection of these works as high quality collectors prints, printed using professional digital methods instead of our traditional litho printing.
