Tribute to Hughie Edwards by Ivan Berryman. (P)
Type: Original
On 4th July, 1941, Wing Commander Hughie Idwal Edwards, flying Blenheim Mk. IV, V6028 (GB-D) led a vital attack on the port of Bremen, Germany. With no cloud cover to conceal their approach, the Blenheims of 105 and 107 Sqn flew 50 miles overland at a perilously low altitude, eventually reaching their target amid formidable anti-aircraft fire. All of the aircraft received some damage and four of the Blenheims were lost, but the mission was a major success, the remaining eleven aircraft returning safely to RAF Swanton Morely. Edwards was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry and leadership
