Tribute to James Nicholson VC by Ivan Berryman [Original Painting]
At the height of the Battle of Britain on 16th August 1940, Flight Lieutenant James Nicholson was ordered to patrol the skies above Southampton, flying Hawker Hurricane P3576, GN-A of 249 Sqn, based at nearby Boscombe Down. His aircraft was struck by cannon fire, wounding him and causing a fire. As Nicholson began to abandon his aircraft, he spotted another enemy fighter and shot it down, despite receiving sever burns to his hands, legs, face and neck by remaining in the cockpit. Having escaped the inferno, he survived his ordeal and was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry and devotion to duty.
