In 1789 Washington was prevailed upon to accept the presidency of the United States and his entry into New York on April 23rd was the occasion of the most enthusiastic rejoicings. The President-elect was escorted by the civic soldiers and principle citizens, triumphant arches were raised in many of the streets, and guns were fired to herald his arrival.
